Linking between articles

Articles that reference each other save you repeating yourself, and give a reader the next step rather than a dead end.

Use "Link to article"

Press / and choose Link to article, then pick the article. Don't paste its URL.

The difference matters: a picked link remembers which article it points at, not just where that article currently lives. Rename things later and it still resolves. A pasted URL is a guess frozen in time.

What a reader gets

Internal links open in the same tab, keeping them inside your help centre. External links open in a new one, so you don't lose them to someone else's site.

Nothing to configure — it's decided by the kind of link.

Where linking earns its keep

Instead of repeating. When two articles need the same explanation, write it once and link. Repeated explanations drift out of sync, and then one of them is wrong.

At the end. "What next" links turn a page that answered one question into a path through your help centre.

On terms of art. The first time an article says something like "identified user", link to the page explaining it. Readers who know it carry on; readers who don't get rescued.

Don't over-link

A paragraph with four links in it is harder to read than one with none. If everything is a link, nothing stands out.

One link per idea, at the point the reader might actually want it.

Links in the widget

Internal links work inside the widget too — tapping one opens that article in the widget rather than throwing the visitor out to a browser tab, so they keep their place in the conversation.
